Discover Donuimun Museum Village: Seoul’s Living History
Located in Seodaemun District, Donuimun Museum Village is where the past and present coexist. Here, dozens of houses and shops built from the early 20th century to the 1980s have been carefully preserved and restored, transforming what was once slated for redevelopment into a vibrant museum neighborhood for everyone.

A Place Where History Breathes
This area once lay just outside the Donuimun (the West Gate of old Seoul), a busy crossroad for merchants, students, and everyday citizens. Throughout colonial times, the Korean War, and the waves of industrialization, the neighborhood’s small houses, alleys, corner shops, and schools witnessed the ever-changing story of Seoul.

The Legend of the Donuimun Guardian Spirit
Among the most fascinating stories is the legend of the Donuimun Guardian Spirit. Locals say that, since the old gate’s days, a gentle protector watched over these streets.
In the 1960s and 70s, people walking home late at night—especially children and shopkeepers—would sometimes notice a tall shadowy figure near the red postbox at the alley’s end. Rather than feeling fear, many felt safe, and some even claimed the Guardian Spirit guided lost children back home or protected the village from misfortune.
During times of redevelopment or hardship, elders reported dreaming of the Guardian Spirit urging residents to “protect the people and memories of this place.” Today, during local festivals, children wear Guardian Spirit masks and parade through the alleys, symbolizing harmony and hope for the neighborhood.
