In the heart of bustling Seoul stands a serene, sacred space where Korea’s royal legacy is carefully preserved: Jongmyo Shrine.
Established in 1395 by King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, Jongmyo is the oldest and most authentic Confucian royal shrine in existence. In 1995, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its profound cultural and spiritual value.
👑 What Is Jongmyo Shrine?
Joseon’s kings and queens enshrined their spirit tablets at Jongmyo and performed royal ancestral rites called Jongmyo Jerye.These Confucian ceremonies reflect the Joseon Dynasty’s deep reverence for filial piety and ritual propriety.
Because they placed such a high value on ancestor worship, they deliberately constructed Jongmyo even before building Gyeongbokgung. As a result, this clearly underscores its central role in Korean governance and culture.
🎵 The Royal Ritual: Jongmyo Jerye
Each year in May, a traditional ritual known as Jongmyo Jerye (종묘제례) is held at the shrine, complete with ancient court music called Jeryeak (제례악).
Because they valued ancestor worship so highly, they consequently built Jongmyo before even starting Gyeongbokgung. In doing so, they highlighted just how central these ancestral rites were to Korean governance and culture.

🏯 Architecture and Atmosphere
Jongmyo’s solemn and minimalist architecture reflects Confucian values of simplicity and respect. The main hall, Jeongjeon, is a long, straight building — the longest of its kind in the world — designed to house the tablets of kings and queens in a strict hierarchical order.
Visitors often describe Jongmyo as a place of unexpected tranquility, where one can feel the weight of history in the silence.
