🌿 Ojukheon – The Historic Birthplace of Yulgok Yi I in Gangneung

Ojukheon in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, is famous as the birthplace of Joseon’s renowned Confucian scholar Yulgok Yi I (1536–1584). The name “Ojukheon” means “House of Black Bamboo,” a nod to the dense grove of dark-hued bamboo that surrounds the site. With over 500 years of history, it offers a rare glimpse into mid-Joseon aristocratic residential architecture.

📌 About Ojukheon
Designated Historic Site No. 165, Ojukheon is especially famous because Yi I’s mother, Shin Saimdang, gave birth to him here in the room known as Mongnyongsil. The house preserves typical mid-Joseon construction and layout, making it an essential site for studying Korea’s traditional housing.
Today, Ojukheon is part of a larger cultural complex that includes the Yulgok Memorial Hall and Gangneung Municipal Museum, making it a must-visit destination on any trip to Gangneung.

📜 Legends and Stories
One well-known legend is about Shin Saimdang’s prophetic dream in Mongnyongsil. Before conceiving Yi I, she dreamt of a dragon ascending to the heavens—a sign that her child would become a great scholar and statesman.
Another tale notes that the black bamboo around Ojukheon was so strikingly glossy it inspired poets and scholars to gather here to write verses and appreciate nature’s elegance.
