The Banryongsong Pine: Icheon’s Guardian Tree

Located in Eosan Village, Dorip-ri, Baeksa-myeon, Icheon, the Banryongsong Pine is recognized as Korea’s Natural Monument No. 381. This ancient pine tree, estimated to be around 850 years old, is famous for its dramatic, twisting branches that resemble a dragon coiling before soaring into the sky.


Legends and History

According to legend, at the end of the Silla Dynasty, the great Buddhist monk Doseon Guksa named this tree Banryongsong—“the pine of the coiled dragon”—believing its form resembled a dragon waiting to ascend to the heavens.
It’s said that Doseon Guksa planted similar “Banryongsong pines” at spiritual sites across Korea, including Seoul, Hamheung, and Gyeryongsan. Among locals, this tree has long been seen as a place of powerful energy—a spot where great people would be born.

  • Management: Since 2012, the pine is supported by around 30 poles, with a protective fence and informative signposts.
  • Condition: While some locals note that maintenance could be improved, the site retains its mystical atmosphere and historical significance.

Banryongsong is one of the “Nine Scenic Wonders of Icheon” and is best enjoyed as part of a one-day tour—pair your visit with the Sansuyu Village, Seolbong Lake, and local museums.
Don’t miss the area’s annual festivals, such as the Icheon Sansuyu Flower Festival in spring and the Rice & Ceramic Festival in autumn. The Banryongsong Pine is often featured as a backdrop for festival videos and local media.
